The NUS has finally been taken over by careerists and New Labour hacks to the point where any fight within it to turn it into an organisation which can really fight to improve education is impossible. But universities across the UK have had rooms and entire buildings occupied in opposition to the massacre and siege of the people of Gaza by Israel. Students are coordinating through blogs and email at a national level, and some occupations are broadening their discussions out to politics in the more general sense. This is the perfect basis on which to form a new campaigning student organisation argues Jo from UCL more…

Last week a young woman was attacked by fascist thugs in
Huddersfield . The left-wing student activist was followed on her way to work and was attacked with a knife as the fascists shouted abuse such as “lesbo”, “Britain-hater” and “dirty red”. She has suffered knife injuries and a fractured rib. The attack was clearly planned and organised as they knew her name and route to work. The young activist, who is a member of student campaign group “Education Not for
Sale ” is likely to have been targeted for her anti-fascist work at university where she has been campaigning to no-platform the BNP.
REVOLUTION of course utterly condemns this attack and we extend our solidarity to those affected.
The Labour government is trying to deport Hicham Yezza from Britain, even though he has lived in Nottingham for 13 years. He recently finished his Phd at Nottingham University and is now an employee at the university. The disgraceful news of his impending deportation was revealed by the Home office on the 23 May. At the National Union of Students (NUS) annual conference a resolution was passed calling on the government to close down the fascist site "Redwatch". This was motivated by a member of Revolution from UCL. When we discussed this at a recent Revolution National Council meeting we decided that our comrades were mistaken to motivate and support this motion. Any measures or powers the state is granted to fight fascists will be used against the far left too. Only the working class movement can wage a progressive struggle against the fascists. In Leeds our comrades have argued persistently against the Unite Against Fascism line on this. When demonstrators protested during the Griffin court case, we were appalled that UAF convenor Weyman Bennet said "turn the BNP into HMP" (ie Her Majesty's Prisons). Not only did this encourage demonstrators to develop tremendous illusions in the state, but it also set the movement up for a defeat when the inevitable happened - the bourgeois state machine found Griffin and Collett "not guilty". Here we reprint an article on the question from our archive. more…
On Saturday 26th April up to 100 people took to the streets of Leeds against the brutal siege of Gaza. The demonstration could not have been timelier. Just in the last few weeks the brutal Israeli siege – where even basic humanitarian aid has been stopped from entering Gaza – has led to the deaths of hundreds of Palestinians. John Bowden, Leeds Revolution, reports on the protest. more…
The British government is currently fighting two aggressive wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Despite promises to withdraw British soldiers are now more heavily engaged in fighting in Iraq than the have been for some time. Meanwhile, in schools, colleges and universities the military pro-actively campaigns to recruit soldiers for these wars. For university students - who have massive debts due to fees and suffer from the rising cost of living - the army recruiters promise help with these costs. On working class estates the army is sold as one of the few routes out of poverty. Recruiters promise “the good life”, that soldiers will “see the world”. They keep quiet about the fact you will have to fight and possibly die in bloody wars. more…
The National Union of Students conference saw an epic battle take place between the left and the right wing. This year the right had been working hard to pass an amendment to the constitution that would strip the NUS of much of its democracy (and let’s be clear, it is not THAT democratic as it stands). The proposals planned to make the NUS conference much smaller and less representative, effectively turning it into a rally to ‘celebrate the work of the NUS’. They also proposed a series of zone conferences over the year (with ominous themes about ‘citizenship’ and bland ones like ‘welfare’). more…

Being a postal worker is a tough job. It means getting up at the crack of dawn, working long shifts and carrying back-breaking amounts of mail. But despite this, postal workers take home as little as £310 per week, well below the industrial average of £400.To add insult to injury, Royal Mail bosses now claim these workers are 'overpaid and under worked'! They've offered posties a miserly 2.5% pay increase. When the prices of goods, services and fuel are rising at 4.8% this so called “rise” is obviously a pay cut. more…
In the early hours of Saturday 5th May, 2007 a house party in the Hyde Park area of Leeds was brutally attacked by the West Yorkshire Police. According to witness accounts, the partiers, mostly consisting of students were only given one warning before the attack, which many did not hear. By the time they realised what was happening, trained dogs were unleashed upon the students, whilst others were attacked with batons - with some partiers suffered savage bite injuries and broken bones. Students, young people and workers should all roundly condemn the police raid on this party and stand in solidarity with those who were attacked more…

REVOLUTION held its national conference last week. Revolution members from across the country came together for two days of debate and discussion. Pat and Alasdair report on the two days of the conference. more…
REVOLUTION was born out of the increase in struggles that took place in the late 1990s. The ‘Battle of Seattle’, the French pensions strike, the Liverpool Dockers’ strike all showed a growing radicalisation; the beginnings of a revolt against globalisation and its claim to be bringing peace, prosperity and democracy to the world. For all the talk of peace, the whole political and economic plan of the imperialist nations following the collapse of the Soviet Union was incredibly aggressive. The markets of the south were opened up to northern finance and monopoly capital, there was stagnation and decline in real wages increasing exploitation. In the north the social welfare systems, won by working class people in the years following the war, were deemed to expensive, and critically another area of investment for profit hungry capital. These economic and social forces continue to have a destablising effect on world politics – war, poverty, famine was order of the day in the new world order. But the balance sheet is not negative, a simple tale of a wave of reaction, because in resisting these policies a new generation has been brought into struggle against imperialism and capitalism. This resolution tracks the development of the anti-capitalist movement, with a particular focus on Europe, how REVOLUTION developed the strategy of building a revolutionary youth international, and the tasks we face in the future. more…

This article was submitted to the comments section of Leeds student, it was not published as the right to reply was given to Hanif. So we have chosen to print it here.
Leeds Student was quick to seize upon comments made recently by Hanif Leylabi, a campaigning activist and member of the Respect party, in an internet chat room. Leylabi said “Jewish settlers are cancer because they steal land and resources and pollute Palestine. They are filth, just like anyone else who occupies someone else’s land in that way is” (“No Respect”, Leeds Student, September 22nd 2006). Criticism did not take long in coming from the JSOC and the LUU executive but, given that in a single breath Hanif had used the term ‘Jewish’ and ‘Cancer’ what was remarkable about it was actually its half heartedness. The JSOC, not a society known for its sympathy for the Palestinian people, described his comments merely as ‘prejudiced’ and the LUU as ‘divisive’, but defended his right to free speech and his record of anti-racist campaigning. more…

On Saturday 16th September the Zimbabwean community alongside trade unionists, youth and No Borders activists staged a 150 strong demonstration through the centre of Leeds. The demonstration was to call attention to the plight of the Zimbabwean refugee community who are being forcibly removed by the Blair government as they implement their racist asylum and immigration policy to remove “failed” asylum seekers. Even though the government of Robert Mugabe has continued the widespread oppression of all opposition to it and thousands continue to suffer brutal repression at the hands of the police and army, the Labour government has decided that Zimbabwe is a safe place to return asylum seekers to. more…

On September 11th 2002, a devastating terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre gave US imperialism the pretext for launching the War on Terror, an offensive to secure control over the world’s people and to pacify the unstable but oil-rich and strategically important Middle East. On the Sunday 30th July as part of its huge military offensive against Lebanon the Israeli army dropped a single massive bomb on the town of Qana killing over 50 innocent civilians who were sheltering for cover in the basement of residential apartments that were destroyed. We need to continue the successes of the last year into next. This means us taking our work to schools, colleges and workplaces, intervening into workers struggles, and building the links between opposition to capitalism in the UK and the rest of the world. This resolution is plan for how we are going to do it over the next year. more…
The weekend of March 25th and 26th saw Revolution's annual conference for 2006. Fifty activists from around the country met at Leeds University Student Union for a weekend of discussion, debate and action planning. The conference drew in young people of all ages, from schools, FE colleges, Universities and workplaces.
Over the two days we ran several sets of discussions and campaigning workshops covering everything from the occupation in Iraq and Palestine, to the fight against the fascist British National Party and the struggle against privatisation and neo-liberalism in the UK.
On the second day of conference we bought together all the ideas from the various sessions and set about planning our perspective and tasks for the next year. Having discussed our plans, we voted to pass 2006's conference resolution, which can be accessed here. more…
We, delegates of university and school students from 114 institutions of higher education and numerous high schools on struggle, in a National Coordination meeting in Lille on April 1 and 2, reaffirm our determination to build a united movement against casualisation and to continue the strike and blockades until the withdrawal of the Law on Equality of Opportunities (LEC), of which the CPE [Contract of First Employment] is an amendment of the CNE [Contract of New Employment]. more…
8 revo members are out in france at the moment, taking part in the movement against the cpe and the french government. We arrived in Lille about 3 on Saturday afternoon and found Lille 3 University where the national student co-ordination was meeting. At the fenc, where students were on guard, we had to explain who we were and the fact that we had travelled from the UK to see them, much to their amazement. more…
For nearly two months the French students have been in struggle against a new law. This law would suspend protection against unlawful dismissal and make it easy for the bosses to sack young employees. As a result the students occupied the universities and schools, fought the police on the streets and showed that they will not accept this attack on their rights. more…
Disciplinary hearings have been taken this month by Leeds University against Dr Frank Ellis, a racist lecturer at the Uni. Frank Ellis used his position as a lecturer to put across extreme racist viewpoints in essays and books published on the internet and in journals such as Right Now, which is edited by an ex-member of the National Front who describes himself as ‘your friendly neighbourhood Nazi’.
The weekend of March 18th marks three years of bloody imperialist occupation in Iraq. In the last six months of the war we have seen the constant evidence of abuse of prisoners by coalition forces, US and UK casualties have reached the 2,000 and 100 mark respectively, and the imperialists have over-seen the election of a puppet government in a sham election. On top of this, 3,000 more UK troops are being sent to support the occupation of Afghanistan. We are also hearing threats from the US towards the governments of Iran, Syria and now the Hamas controlled Palestinian Authority, all under the veil of the ‘long war’.
On Saturday January 21st around 150 youth held a demonstration against the proposed dispersal order that the council are planning to place on Leeds City Centre. The demonstration has come out of anger from young people who use the city centre at weekends, and would be the target of such a dispersal order. more…
Over the last month Leeds Revo has been holding stalls and stunts at the Corn Exchange in the city centre. The focus of the campaigning has been the draconian dispersal order placed on the area (used by local youth for years) by the council, and heavy-handidly enforced by the police.
Leeds Revolution member Nick has given a report of the campaign for the website. more…
On Saturday 19th November, Revo London spiced up our usual stall and paper sale in Brixton with a bit of street theatre on the theme of Climate Change. This was to help us get the word out about the demonstration on 3rd December in London as part of an international day of action against climate change.
We express our complete solidarity with the youth who have been engaged in pitched battles with the racist police in for the last three weeks.Their brave actions are a defensive response to interior minister Sarkosy’s inflammatory call to ‘scour the scum off the streets’ of impoverished French suburbs. They are a response to years of police racism and intimidation of young people. They are rooted in the poverty, inequality and mass unemployment that is the reality of life for the forgotten poor of the French suburbs.more…
On Friday around 150 people demonstrated in Bilin, a town in the Palestinian West Bank close to the Israeli border. A mother is mounting a legal challenge in the High Court to take away the right of young people under the age of 16 to confidentiallity if they are pursuing an abortion. If passed it would mean that doctors would be legally obliged to tell the parents of under 16s who were having an abortion.
As if bans on wearing hoodies weren't enough! This is another total attack on the rights of young people. Natalie S from London Revolution, was on Radio 5 live this morning arguing against this attack. You can hear how she did by following this link to the bbc website . The link will take you straight to the BBC Radio Player that requires you have RealPlayer installed on your computer.
By the time this article reaches your hands news of London?s successful bid to host the 2012 Olympics will be nothing new to you and you will most probably have clear feelings about this. Some of you may even be pleased with the chance to see such a prestigious event in your own proverbial back garden; I however, don?t share this excitement. In fact I mourn the news. more…
The terrorist attacks on bus and tube services in London on July 7th killed many innocent people. The attacks deserve nothing but total condemnation from all socialists and progressive people. The victims, survivors and families involved have our deepest sympathies.
REVOLUTION members from schools and colleges across the country will be starting their summer holidays early this year, but not to spend a week at Skegness in the rain listening to their parents pretend not to be having an argument.? REVOLUTION school students will be off to a far more interesting destination: Gleneagles.
Leeds REVOLUTION organised a very successful action against the Banks in Leeds as part of the Dump the Debt campaign. Around 40 - 50 people marched through Leeds to Park Row where all the banks are. We stood outside chanting noisily about the third world debt, shouting out how many children had died (1 every 3 seconds!) from third world poverty and curable diseases. more…
Gone are the scrawled reactionary billboards, the baby kissing and Peter Snow and his computer animations. There?s no more talk of ?narrow marginals?, ?swings? and ?key constituencies? on the news. Because now a country of 58,789,194 people has chosen its new government and the way it will be run for the next 4 or 5 years. more…
