Cuts at University of East Anglia: Edward Acton, tell us the truth

10 December 2009

This year at UEA, students are trying to force the vice-chancellor to make public his position on a potentially huge hike in tuition fees for students.

Currently, fees are capped by the government at £3,250, and universities are not allowed to charge students more than this amount per year.

But he is refusing to make a public statement regarding whether or not he wants the cap to be lifted. The Fight Fees campaign has it under good authority that the management are gearing up for around £6,000-£7,000 a year increas.

UEA management is apparently so confident that the cap will be lifted after a government review of student fees, that they are even taking on some new members of staff.

However the university management wants to do this by making the poorest students pay for the wages of staff so the university doesn’t have to.

However as with every other school, college and university in the country, it looks like cuts may take place too! The information is hazy, however a student union officer (mistakenly on his part!) informed a REVOLUTION member that the student union does know the extent of cuts proposed by management, but it is “confidential”. Well, with us footing the bill it is about time that universities open the books and show us where OUR money is going.
