SUPPORT THE FBU
Being a firefighter is a hard, dangerous job that requires many different skills from cutting people out of car wrecks to dealing with a chemical spill and other large scale disasters. But their pay in no way reflects this, and many must work second jobs just to get by. They are demanding £30,000 a year to make up for their stagnating pay - a 40% increase.
Labour has claimed these firefighters are greedy, yet just last year Two Jags Prescott awarded ministers a 40% pay increase. Because they really NEED it... What hypocrisy! A 40% pay rise would still leave the firefighters £25,000 worse off than the lowest paid MP.
We want the firefighters to win and spearhead a pay revolt throughout Britain. Tony Blair is determined to smash their strike as a way of cowing other public sector workers. Enough of poverty pay and fiver-an-hour public sector jobs, now is the time to organise. The FBU struggle is the struggle of everyone working in Britain today.
The FBU is calling for workers everywhere to look at their health and safety regulations and close their workplace if the fire cover being provided by New Labour (an inadequate number of amateur fire fighters with substandard equipment from the 1950s) means dangerous working conditions. Tube and rail workers are again shutting down the London tube and Chunnel during an FBU strike due to the increased risk. Every worker and student can do the same.
