Rosa Luxembourg

A revolutionary life.

Rosa Luxemburg was born in 1870 and went to school in what was then Russian Poland. She attracted a lot of attention from the authorities because of her interest in the revolutionary movement and was forced to leave Russia.

In exile, she joined the German Social Democratic Party (SPD), and became an influential leader - despite being a young woman, Polish and disabled. She spent much of her time arguing against other leaders in the SPD on particular issues including the question of the general strike.
